Today, as we battled back to win at home against a resilient Stoke side - like the United players - my friends and I celebrated Chicharito's goal like the game was a Champions League semi final, standing between us and the final stage of glory. I'm going to ignore the glaring defensive weaknesses that are handicapping our side. Instead, I will readily admit that we badly needed this win. To momentarily silence the insatiable British commentators, reporters, and all other fans who had written their "Downfall of United" monologues the minute Ferguson announced his retirement.
With each goal by Van Persie, Rooney, and Chicharito, we were reminded of what all United sides have carried within them: the ability to dig deep within when our reserves are running low. And although this win may not set off any alarm bells for the teams above us in the table, it's what is written between the lines that speaks volumes. It is a simple, yet beautiful message. Not even with a change of management can you change the intricacies of United.
It undoubtedly will not be an easy season... but then again, Manchester United has never made anything easy.
